Okay, I’m sure there are plenty worse, but I’m still pissed. Yesterday, my power went out. None of my breakers were tripped, so I assumed it was just t he storm and went to bed. Woke up to still   no power, but my neighbor was watching TV. So, I called the power company and asked if they had accidentally shut mine off. They told me that it was showing as active on their end, so I thanked them and went outside to check the main breaker. It was still in the “ on” position. So I called the complex and explained the situation. They said they’d send out some maintenance guys right away. This was at about 9:45 AM, or ~ 15 hours into my blackout. By 11, I gave up on waiting and went out to run some errands. Came back at 1:30 to find my breaker box open, but still no power. So they came in, checked my breakers, never even considered flipping the light switch, and then just left. So I went online and put in a work order. I flagged it as high priority. At 5:00, it started getting dark so I came over to my parents’ house for the night. And now I’m still waiting, with my work order stuck in the “ scheduled” state. The office closed an hour ago, so they’re not doing it today I guess. All my food is spoiled now and I’m pissed. Today was my day off, and I didn’t get to play Red Dead like I wanted to. That may not be important, but it’s not something I should be forced to go without either. My WiFi is down, too, of course, so I’ve been on data all day. My phone is only charged because of my car.

Basically, screw my apartment complex. This should have become one of   their top maintenance priorities as soon as I reported it. If I don’t have power after work tomorrow, I don’t even know what I’m going to do.

I know it’s not the same as having no power at all, but our fridge stopped working on September 8. It took them 5 days just to get someone here to see it, and all they did was call in the code on the screen, order parts, and tell me they’d call to reschedule once parts were in. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, but again, it’s not like not having any power at all.

I hope they get their act together in the morning. I’d be calling as soon as someone answers the phone and not let them go until you have a better response.

What state are you in? What temperature is it outside?

Look into your state laws. If they do not act in a timely fashion, you could hire the work yourself and have them bill the complex. I suggest you confirm that this is valid in your state before you do it though.

You have a right to a habitable environment, and one of the major components is electricity. Electricity is considered a more urgent issue than your typical problem.

You may also want to inquire about withholding or requesting a reduction in rent.

This all depends on how long it goes on for. Hopefully it is resolved soon

Unless it’s a nice condo community — which has its unique potential pitfalls — renting it like playing roulette  with 5 bullets in the barrel instead of 1 (is barrel the correct term here? Not very learned in munitions anatomy).

5 days to get someone to look at it is nuts, even before the delay fixing it. I’d hope they could get a maintenance guy to take a look same day, and even if they couldn’t fix it, at least swap it with one from a vacant apartment or something.

I was without power for over a week last year, but I figure getting flooded by a hurricane merited extra lenience, especially since the regular staff mostly got flooded at their own homes and we were dealing mainly with people at the corporate office in CA, who obviously couldn’t do much. The situation was complicated as well, since elements owned by both the power company and the building were damaged, so there had to be coordination to actually get everything fixed. And then the electricians the building hired accidentally skipped the stuff they needed to fix for my section of the building so I had to run down and get the office to catch them before they left so we could finally get it back up and running.

Well, I’m not in an apartment building, it’s our own house so everything is on us. But I solved the problem in the short term with a Craigslist fridge. The manufacturer is replacing the other one but it will be a bit.

Ah yes, that makes a difference, but yeah, still shitty service. Fridges are not something that people can wait weeks to replace. If they couldn’t fix it in a timely fashion, they should have been on the hook for replace it right away (good that they got there eventually!)

oh, it’s been a comedy. a hurricane caused an evacuation of the only distribution center for parts, then various other delays... but yeah. The replacement is coming.

Luckily the temperature is fine, but I live in Georgia, which has virtually no protections for working class people in any situation. Maybe there’s something on the books, but I doubt it.

In any case, I’m definitely going to ask to have my rent reduced for the month.

I’ m in Georgia too and there isn’t much you can do unless it exceeds 30 days (or 60 - can’t remember).
